REVIEWS

Entering its third year in publication this December 2009, Daeida Magazine maintains a commitment to
exclusive content-rich interviews and exclusive full page images of the veteran entertainers and
contemporary stars we all love, admire and follow passionately.

“Daeida focuses on women in music, film, theatre, television, literature, and dance because they’re often the
most overlooked and taken for granted in their respective fields,” explains publisher and editor David Ybarra.
“Our interviews and photo shoots are fun, unpredictable and often playful, but that is not to say we go into
the experience without focus.  We know our subjects, we choose our subjects and there is no expectation for
a star, such as Connie Francis, to bring more than her presence, stories, wisdom, honesty and trust that the
experience is going to be positive, uplifting and happily memorable.  Our goal – from beginning to end – is to
elevate the star and reflect some of their illumination back at them, respectfully.  We write for the fans and it is
the fans who keep us in print.  That’s why the interviews are long and detailed, and also why many of the
pictures are full-page size. The fans demanded it and we listened.  The literary and visual qualities of Daeida
Magazine reflect the harmony of that connection. Every time.”

Ybarra believes the key to the magazine’s success is because it is art-driven and not reliant on advertisers or a
board of directors to determine the content or look of the magazine.  Explains Ybarra: “The vision is a shared
effort between two people; the editor and the art director.  Those two people also happen to be the
publisher and the photographer.  And those two very same people happen to be myself and Gor Megaera!”
Indeed, the artistic combination of Ybarra’s writing and Megaera’s photography make for an ideal pairing
who collaborate masterfully on a shared vision that has become the trademark “Daeida style.”

“Daeida Magazine is modeled on the classic movie and fan magazines of long ago with fabulous names like
Modern Screen and Cinolandia where you’d find celebrities looking beautiful and at their best, beside really
in-depth interviews that preserved the personality and speaking-style of that movie star or singer being
featured,” says Ybarra. Influenced also in-part by the variety and style of After Dark magazine and the young
Interview magazine (both lost to history), Daeida Magazine emerges uniquely, cockily and triumphantly as a
publication that firmly respects the integrity of its stars, the intelligence of their fans, and satisfies the desire of
all readers who want more than sound-bites and paparazzi-style photographs.  “If you’re looking for
sensationalism or scandals, this probably isn’t the magazine for you,” Ybarra states. “History and lore, we talk
about; but not lies.”  And for any critic of the glamorous style of the photography in Daeida Magazine, Ybarra
quips, “If you’re looking for realism, go pick up Field and Stream and not Daeida Magazine! We’re in the
business of making magic with words, lights, a little makeup and a lot of love.”
